The Sierra Leone Law School provides professional legal training and conducts final examinations for those persons seeking to become members of the legal profession in Sierra Leone.

 

Upon successful completion for the requirements of the Sierra Leone Law School, candidates are issued  a Certificate for Call to the Bar by the Council of Legal Education.

 

Since 1990 the Law School has enrolled law graduates holding an honours degree in Law awarded by the University of Sierra Leone or holding any other degree in Law from a recognized university or any other Institutions of higher learning of any commonwealth country approved by the Council.

 The Law School

The first twenty-two of twenty-six candidates were called to the Bar in December 1990. Since then nearly 400 graduates have been called from Sierra Leone and other African Countries.

 

The one year Law School Programme is designed to prepare candidates for the Final Examination which all intending legal practiitioners must pass before being admitted to practice Law in Sierra Leone.

 

Admission to the profession in Sierra Leone entitles practitioners to act as both a solicitor and barrister since it is a fused profession.

 

Practical Skills of training include the following:

  • Criminal procedure

  • Civil procedure

  • Legal drafting including of documents for use both in and out of court

  • Writing of legal opinions

  • Advocacy

  • Professional practice ethics and Advocacy

 

Core Subjects taught as a review and for training in practical application of content include:

  • Criminal Law

  • Law of Contract

  • Law of Tort

  • Equity and Trust 

  • Constitutional Law

  • Land Law
